Karla Sofía Gascón, the first trans performer nominated for an acting Oscar, is set to star as a psychiatrist who “embodies God and the devil” in the upcoming Italian psychological thriller The Life Lift. Directed by debut filmmaker Stefania Rossella Grassi and co-starring Vincent Gallo, the film follows Gabriel, a tormented New Yorker haunted by Post-it notes in his elevator ordering him to commit murders .

Gascón previously shared the Best Actress award at Cannes for her role in Emilia Pérez but faced backlash from trans and Mexican communities over resurfaced social media posts, which significantly diminished her Oscar chances.
